The Road Rat Racer XR on Track

Having spent the past two weekends at a national-level go kart track with a pair of GatorMoto’s Road Rat Racer XR racing karts, all I can say is what “FUN”.

I raced IKF (International Kart Federation) events in the mid-70s and WKA (World Karting Association) races in recent years. When my friend purchased two (2) new Road Rat Racer XR kart chassis both with 6.5 h.p. 4-stroke motors, it didn’t take much to convince me to spend an afternoon helping him with the minor assembly required. GatorMoto provides a handy metric tool bag with each kart but bring your own soft-head hammer for tapping this and that. After setting up the karts, we headed early the next morning to the track. We’re fortunate to live just north of GatorMoto’s headquarters in Gainesville, Florida, providing us with easy access to Jacksonville’s famed 103rd Street Go Kart Track. The track is located in a City Park and open year round from dawn to dusk at no charge. Jax’s 103rd Street Complex is a historic kart-racing facility with drivers like Juan Pablo Montoya, Danica Patrick, Scott Speed, Graham Rahal, Hurley Haywood, Mark Dinsmore, Scott Lagasse, Jr., etc. among those who have competed there over the past 30 years.

When you drive a racing kart with a 4-stroke karting engine, the most important step is to always check the oil level of the motor when you arrive in the pits. This is the same suggestion given your owner’s guide for operating your new racing kart. Both of our Road Rat Racer XR go karts took about 8 ounces to fill the crankcase to the proper operating level. After each trip to the kart track, you should drain and replace the engine oil. That will help ensure your 6.5 h.p. “clone motor” will last for very long time. When you refill the crankcase after an oil change, GatorMoto’s instruction book recommends 0.60 liters or 20 ounces of engine oil. We filled each engine with a 10W-40W 4-stroke kart racing oil but any good grade of motor oil from your local auto parts dealer should do fine. By the way, both kart engines took exactly 20 ounces of oil. We also adjusted one throttle cable where it loops through the backside of the gas pedal, pumped the tires (20 lbs. front and 25 lbs. rear for a 135-degree track temperature), lubed the axle’s bearings and greased the chain.

Remember to wear a safety helmet anytime you are driving a go kart. Karting and kart racing are safe motorsports, but always cover your think-tank with a helmet. At Jacksonville’s municipal kart track, wearing a helmet is a park rule. You are also required to have long sleeves, long pants and shoes when driving on the racetrack. When you first start to get in-and-out of your Road Rat Racer XR, always take care not to press your feet against the go kart’s tie rods. To a less-experienced karter, these look like nice foot holds but they will bend and wreck your kart’s steering. Most karters step in-and-out of the kart seat, and then slide their body forward or aft into the kart chassis. With a little practice, you will slip in an out like a pro. Now that your wheels are on the ground, turn the steering from side to side to make certain everything feels secure. Check your hydraulic-rear kart brake by depressing the pedal with your left foot and make certain the throttle cable is not catching on your right leg or shoe.

Once you are settled into your seat, turn the red switch on your engine to “On”. Now, have a friend give you a start. It is never a good idea to start a go kart racing engine without a driver in the seat. We did and now we are ordering a new nose cone. With the choke on, our 4-stroke engines came to life in a few pulls. If your kart motor stalls, push the choke to off and give another pull on the starter handle. Our engines did not require using the choke once our Road Rat Racing kart engines had been cranked for the first time each day. In fact, for the rest of the day, we both just drove lap after lap only stopping to switch karts and top off the gas tanks. What a day of affordable FUN. If you have ever rented a concession kart or bumper kart at an amusement park, this is the go kart that you always wished you had. Driving GatorMoto’s Road Rat Racer XR is like driving an amusement kart on steroids. With a few adjustments here and there, my friend was running high 40-second laps on one of the fastest kart racing tracks in the world.

I’ve already told my friend that I have to work around the house this weekend. But, that is what I told him last weekend and we both ended up sneaking out of the house at the break of day. Next weekend we are either testing at the Ocala Gran Prix Kart Track or at the Monticello Karting Track near Tallahassee, Florida. Both tracks host National Kart Races and are open for all day for timed practice sessions. Karting is just a lot of FUN and GatorMoto’s Road Rat Racer XR kart is an affordable alternative for drivers who want to compete. Hope to see you at the track soon.
